Wakonda State Park Lakes (Northeast Region)
Information: 573/248-2530 All three of the larger lakes in the Park are seasonally connected, but recent fish community surveys show differences among their sport fish populations. Wakonda Lake has an excellent population of largemouth bass with a relatively large number longer than 15". Agate Lake, with less habitat for young bass, has a relatively low bass population, but several large individuals are present. Bluegill anglers now have an opportunity to catch larger fish in Agate Lake and Wakonda Lake, although the relative number of fish larger than 6" has declined in recent surveys. White crappie will be mostly in the 8-10" range in 2002 in all the lakes, with an occasional larger one being caught. Black crappie were not as abundant in the most recent surveys and will be in the 8-9" range this coming year. Channel catfish, maintained by annual stockings into Agate and Wakonda Lakes, will average about 17 inches long. Bowfishermen have an opportunity to harvest carp, buffalo, and gar from Wakonda Lake and Agate Lake under statewide regulations for impoundments. Yellow bass, a small species introduced from the Mississippi River during extreme floods, have expanded their population in all three lakes. Many other species commonly caught in the Mississippi River are present and may provide anglers an occasional surprise. Public boat ramps are located on Agate and Wakonda Lakes. Agate Lake also has a barrier-free fishing dock. Boats are not allowed on Jasper Lake. Fish attractors constructed of used Christmas trees have been placed in both larger lakes in the past. Contact the Park office for locations of the trees bundles. fishing prospects courtesy MDC Wakonda State Park also has full camping facilities and a swimming beach.
