ATA - ARCHERY TRADE ASSOCIATION’S 2003 TRADE SHOW
By: Allen “horntagger” Morris

WHAT IS IT?

ATA Archery Trade Association – It is a place for new companies to show off their products. It is a place for existing companies to show off their new and existing products. It is a one stop shop for anyone with a bow shop, sporting goods store and hunting club or what every you might be trying to stock or sell. It is a place if you have any interest in buying or selling hunting itemsfor the outdoors you should have been this year no matter how big you think your are or how small.

ARCHERY TRADE ASSOCIATION is the 50-year-old archery trade association composed of over 600 archery manufacturers, distributors, retailers, sales reps and thearchery media who are working together to "promote and protect" your bow and arrow sports. Over 90 people from 70 companies volunteer their time and expenses working for you! Whether you are a bowhunter, a target archer, or a member of the archery industry, you benefit from ATA's programs and teamwork. All ATA programs are funded by ATA's annual industry trade show.

WHY GO?

I attended last years show for one day in Nashville, Tennessee and I was overwhelmed and mildly prepared. This time, with little knowledge I attended the show for 3 days, January 17th – 19th, 2003 at the Indiana Convention Center – Indianapolis, Indiana. Which again was easy to find all you had to dowas follow the river camouflage hats and dress shirts along the sidewalk and into the Convention Center.

Again this year, even if you have been before nothing you can imagine can prepare you for a show like this. Without stopping and talking very long and walking at a steady pace it takes over 3 hours just to see everything at a glimpse. With over 500 hundred manufactures and suppliers on hand, answering question, showing you new products, setting up dealers, and thanking existing dealers for all their help last year.

FAMILY REUNION

Well I am not going to list every manufacturer, supplier or outdoor personalities at the show, but I will list a several so you get an idea. Bill Jordan’s Realtree, Hunter’s Specialties, Primos Hunting Calls, Drury Outdoors, Easton Archery, Knight & Hale Game Calls, PSE, Bear, Hoyt, Mathews, Bowtech,TruGlo, Summit, Trophyline, RiversEdge, Hunter Safety System, Limb Saver, OutdoorEdge, Carolina Archery Products, Muzzy, MapCard TrailMac, and Outdoors Yellow Pages for the manufacturer and suppliers.

For the outdoor personalities, it had to be the place to be of the hunting world. Bill Jordan, Michael Waddell, David Blanton, Alex Rutledge, Eddie Salter, Allen Morris, Gerald Stewart, Stan Potts, Mark Drury, Will Primos, Jim Horn, David Hale, Harold Knight, Walter Parrott, Brenda Valentine, Jerry Martin, George Dixon, Chuck Adams, Ralph Cianciarulo, Vicki Cianciarulo, Bob Foulkrod, Kevin “HAWG” Kreh, Tom Miranda, Dan Fitzgerald, Guy Fitzgerald, DavidMorris, Phil Phillips, Terry Rohm and Dave Watson . You can honestly say the pro-staff for every company was on hand to answer questions. It’s like a family reunion andthat the way they make you feel when they talk with you, just one of the family.

STAY FOR DINNER

After the show is over on Saturday, an ATA Dinner and Fundraiser starts with hundreds in attendance. The evening is started with the silent and live auctions of once in lifetime items contributed by archery industry leaders and archery and bowhunting organizations. The highlight of the evening is the REALTREE BAND, which put on an outstanding performance, which lasted well into the night. With Michael Waddell on the lead guitar, who can jam with the bestof the best.

IF YOU ARE A DEALER

With events like this, I will say that the heritage of hunting may be under attack. But, it is strong in tradition, people, and companies trying to keep it alive! It is just too bad this is not open to the general public.

Just in case you want to get a head start for next year. It will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – January 23rd – 25th, 2004 and January 7-9, 2005 at the Indiana Convention Center – Indianapolis, Indiana. For show information call 1-866-266-2776. Also check out www.archerytrade.org

I am glad that I was able to attend such an event again and I hope I will again. Horntagger.

Aerosol Tink's 69 and Spray Timer and Spray Commander

Aerosol Tink's 69 and Spray Timer and Spray Commander

Spray Timer from Spraylogik. Ontop of a Aerosol can with Wellington Tink’s #69 Doe-in-Rut Buck Lure

Very new and exciting at this years Archer Trade Association 2003 Trade Showfor next year deer season will be the Spray Timer from Spraylogik. Ontop of a Aerosol can with Wellington Tink’s #69 Doe-in-Rut Buck Lure will putthe scent industry on alert. With an on/off switch, adjustable spray duration, and adjustable timer up to hours on this Spray Timer from Spraylogik. This isthe ultimate timer for any deer hunter. Also available from Spraylogik is theScent Commander Spray Unit that has a remote that I was told, can be used up to50 yards.

As always Wellington is leading the way with Aerosol Scent in a 10oz can. Eventhough a price may start out high, I see savings in the long run, on when andwhere you want your scent dispensed. I see a lot of Trophy Class Bucks hittingthe ground this coming fall with this new product.

With Spraylogik Spray Timer and Commander units I also see the rest of thescent industry following the same path or be left out of the woods and on theshelf. With out a doubt I will have this in my bag of tricks. The buck in myarea won’t see this coming.

P.S. With this product so new you better ask tell your local hunting storeabout this if you want it in by early fall.

Hawg's Limited Products - Vanish Hunter, BF Pre & Post Rut, BF Rut and BF FGland

Well not so new but one of the new things I experienced during last yearseason. To explain, each year I try out a new scent out. I started using Hawg'sLimited - Buck Fever Synthetics Well I put out 10 scrapes using the pre andpost no real hitting or sign of any until I went back WOW they opened up ascrape on the center of property been over 10 years since they did that. Had anarea that had a rub and about the size of my thumb and just 10 feet away I putit on a cedar tree about the size of calf and wow they are just tearing it up.

Then counted 52 rubs on or coming into and on the property. The Saturday beforeI put out a mock scrape behind a stand and put the camera on the trail goingthe other way.

Had four deer tracks in the scrape and no pictures on the camera. Took them theopposite that I have seen them travel. Saturday I put out the BF Rut at 6:30a.m. in the scrape they started had deer droppings and the scrape had been tornup when I got back to it about 9:30 a.m. could have missed it in the dark buteither way good sign.

Put some BF Fgland in a canister and move camera to it at 2:00 p.m. and leftthen got back at 7:00 a.m. the next morning wow one picture and deer droppingthrown out and scrape torn up. By the time I had taken the pictures out of thecamera had a very nice 8 pointer hit the scrape in less than 4 days. Evenripped the canister off the limb and flipped the limb upside down. I did seethe reaction I had with the Vanish Hunter Spray with a 8 point buck within 10feet and the wind in his face, could not scent me, while on the ground.

So with last year now behind me and getting to interview and meet Kevin “Hawg”Kreh. It is a worth letting the other hunters out in the country know how greatthis product is. I will be using this product next year for sure, guess that isthe end of trying out new scent each year.

P.S. Also had to order on-line last year. But I will be contacting my localhunting stores to carry it before early fall, I suggest you do the same if youhave not tried this.

After seeing Little Big Horn Products for the first time at the Buckmaster Expoin 2002 and buying the Deer-Hunters Bandoleer which after a few minormodification is now my all time favorite bowhunting vest. But at the ArcherTrade Association 2003 Trade Show. I was able to see some more products fromthe Little Big Horn. The one that really impressed me was the Epeards-Lounge –The last turkey vest you’ll ever need. Also which impresses me even more is thefact that with more and more kids hitting the woods, but nothing fits. Well newthis Jake-Lounge, which is a turkey vest, lounge chair combination for thesmaller hunter.

I will have to get one for my boy before the youth turkey season starts. And oncehe grows a little a Deer-Hunters Bandoleer for bow season.

COUGH SILENCER

I was able to see first hand at the Buckmasters Expo in 2002 the coughsilencer. But at the Archer Trade Association 2003 Trade Show I was able to see an example of how well it works. With a small air horn blown in the coughsilencer, it barely made a sound. If you have ever work all year to get thefood plots ready, deer stands ready, then the opening day of the season you endup with a cold and a cough. Well try this out as a back up this year, beforethe big one hears you. It works through a system of baffles breaking down thesound-waves as they enter each chamber, along with some cotton filters to keepthe sound down. Very light and easy to clean since you don’t want your coldback. You check it out see for yourself.

VITA-RACK 26 - QUALITY DEER MINERAL

FOR A QUAILTY WHITEAIL HERD

I have always been a true believer in mineral for deer. Gives both morelactation for does and higher birth weight, which in-turn will give a highersurvival rate. Along with the benefits of bigger antler growth. The ArcheryTrade Association 2003 Trade Show is like I have said before the best of thebest. Hunter Specialties is always blazing new trails for the future of huntingwith some of the great sportsmen of our time, along with some of the greatestproducts.

I believe Hunter Specialties new VITA-RACK 26 is just what is need for any oneinterested in quality deer management. With this idea in mind, VITA-RACK 26 isa total whitetail nutritional system. Backed with over ten years of researchand development. VITA-RACK 26 contains a balanced blend of 14 trace mineralsand 12 vitamins.

What I was informed about this new VITA-RACK 26 from Hunter Specialties at theshow. That these are food grade vitamins, which means they should be absorbedinto the system faster as needed. But one unexpected benefit of feeding thesupplement has been the huge reduction in the number of ticks and other pestbothering the deer.

TURKEY TROPHY KIT, BEARD TROPHY KIT AND SPUR TROPHY KIT

I have always wanted to dress up my spurs each year for mounting, but could never come up with anything. The Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show justsolved my problem. King Outdoors has some of the finest trophy displays I haveseen. You have the Turkey Trophy Kit, Beard Trophy Kit, and Spur Trophy Kit.

They give great respect to a great trophy like the wild turkey. All of theremounting kits are one of a kind and are as unique as the quality oak they arecrafted from. Easy step by step directions allow them to be constructed in justminutes.

For me I plan on dropping the information off to my favorite taxidermist andtell him that the Spur Trophy Kit is what I want on my next mount. This kitgives me the option of displaying the tail, beard and spurs by turning itupside down, or if I am a little short on money or room then I could just keepit like it is and do the beard and spurs.

Check it out see what your think.

THE BUCK MAGNET

AUTOMATICALLY OPENS FOR SCENT TO BE RELEASED.

The Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show also had a economical way to get your favorite deer scent out during the day and maybe bring the buck in on astring at the time you want. The Buck Magnet is the world first programmable deer scent dispenser. How itworks is at the time and duration you want the vents open on the sideautomatically. This way you’re there and ready when the vents open and allowthe scent to flow in the wind. Might just make that Nocturnal Buck come out andplay during the day looking for a buck to fight or a doe to hang out with. Allat a very reasonable cost, since scents are not exactly cheap why waste it onthe ground, just put it in the air.

TRAILMAC IN REALTREE HARDWOODS

There are tons of different game cameras out today. I was able to see theTrailMac first at the Buckmasters Expo in 2002. But at the Archery TradeAssociation 2003 Trade Show after talking with them, it is good to see someonewanting a better mousetrap, or in this case deer, and turkey. But, just likeany good hunter which is how they started.

They remember their roots and made more than one camera system. They madedifferent ones to fit you pocket book. Also the camera comes in a RealtreeHardwoods Pattern which just looks awesome and keeps the wildlife and otherhunters from seeing it. Check out the prices and features this game camera hasto offer. You might get the picture of a lifetime.

Also if you have the money, check out the digital system. Pictures are great, but what I really like is the digital video the camera will take. 10 seconds ofa buck coming into edge of the picture and leaving on the other side. WOW!WOW! WOW! With what I was told you can view it on your computer, but because ofthe pixel size it is to blurry for TV. But is still just awesome.

BIG OAK OUTDOORS - THE DOUBLE WIDE

Again the best of the best show up at the Archery Trade Association 2003 Tradeshow. I was first introduced to Big Oak Outdoors at the ATA 2002 Trade Show inNashville, TN.. Then at the Buckmaster 2002 Expo in Montgomery, AL. Even aftera year and several shows later, not one company has come close to making astand for the family in mind.

Let me tell again this year, out of all the stands to get kids and family intohunting. There is no other that I have seen that has yet to compare. It is theonly on that out of the dozens I have looked at that has expanded metal on theends and the back for safety. When it comes to my son, that is number one. Getthe family into the picture with “THE DOUBLE WIDE” stand from Big Oak OutdoorsInc.

This is a must do stand for anyone taking there kids hunting. This stand hassome of the things, I was looking for when I start taking my son deer huntingin the next year or two.

1. 4-foot BENCH seat

2. Expanded Metal ENDS and BACK for safety is what set this stand out at theshow, and exactly what I was looking for in a stand.

3. Fitted one-piece seat and back cushion and netting could be added and is amust for comfort to stay in the stand for long period of time.

Add bonus, is if you are into video taping hunts, your friend or family can sitright next to you and film and enjoy the action.

But that is not all, Big Oak Outdoors, Inc. had, they also have these greatlooking Sportsmen Chair’s – Great for around the camp, hunting, and fishing. Ican only rough it so much as I get older. Check both these items out before theseason get here.

Growing leaps and bounds in just a few months, again they brought the FLEXTONE(All-N-One Deer Call) This flexible call is one of the easiest call you everfind. Squeeze the buttons for instant change in tone and volume. Control thevolume by squeezing the button labeled on the front of the barrel. Makes youngbuck, doe and fawn calls and a mature buck. Check it out. But they alsointroduced new this year the Wrist Strap Mini Grunter which allows for handfree calling, Fawn Bawl and Rattle Bag. They also have waterfowl, turkey andpredator calls, this company will be one the game Call Company’s you will seemore of as the year goes by.

EGG Push Button Yelper

The wildest turkey call to come out at the Archery Trade Association 2003 TradeShow is the EGG Push Button Yelper by M.A.D. Calls. With exceptional sound andcomfort, this is a must call for any youth hunter or old pro.

Its unique egg design coupled with aluminum soundboard results in some of themost realistic and high pitched turkey talk that old gobbler will hear. Can begun mounted or used as a traditional push button Yelper for one-handed use.

Great addition for any youth getting out in the turkey woods this spring orfall. Plus for the old pro turkey hunter, one more high pitched caller that oldgobbler hasn’t heard before.

I will definitely get one for my son this year of course he will have to share.Never can have to many calls, when you hit the woods.

Drury Outdoors

The wildest and most cutting edge information filled video to make a betterhunter at the Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show is the 100% WildFairchase Vol. 3 “On the Move”. I was able to see Vol. 2 Upper End Managementduring a seminar at Bass Pro in St. Charles, Mo. by Mark Drury. That had to beone of the best seminars and the video has some great footage and information.

Along with one of the most awesome after the shot scenes I have ever seen of abuck.

Without a doubt Vol. 3 – 100% Wild Fairchase “On the Move” will be just asgreat. You will have to check it out for yourself and decide. But other greatvideo’s to look for by Terry and Mark Drury for Drury Outdoors in 2003 are asfollows. Dream Season 6, Whitetail Madness 6, The Big Game 2, Whitetails Takingit to Extreme III.

RAPID LADDER

One of the new ladder stands that I used this year and found to be verycomfortable and easy to use was the Rapid Ladder from Rivers Edge. They alsoattended the Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show. This stand from RiversEdge had a nice size sitting area, over all weight was great for a ladder standand very stable once up and easy to put up, in a short amount of time. If youare looking for an overall one-man ladder stand, I don’t think you can go wrongwith the Rapid Ladder from Rivers Edge.

THE HUNTER SAFETY SYSTEM

The hottest item at the Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show was theHUNTER SAFETY SYSTEM. Today hunting from a stand is very common place, alongwith that does not have to come with a price. First we saw the safety belt, which was better than nothing, but still with hidden dangers. Then came thefull body harness, which in some case, in the dark takes some effort to put onand take off and can lead to apathy of not wearing it all because it is toomuch trouble.

Well I believe the 3rd and finally generation of stand safety has finally come, with the Hunter Safety System hitting the market full force. This Hunter SafetySystem Vest has the safety system built right in. With rip-away stitching onthe tether to cushion the impact of a fall to the body, velco pocket for radio, compass, cell phone, etc, deep pockets for gloves, hand warmers, etc., and ametal game-drag D-ring located in the rear. The Hunter Safety System wasdesigned to replace the tangled straps so often associated with full bodyharnesses.

I believe this will become standard equipment with most hunters that hunt froma stand. The “System” takes only seconds to put on, is comfortable, and won’tinterfere as the shot is taken. I believe that is what most hunters are lookingfor.

Check it out and see for yourself. Always ask yourself when climbing a standhow much is your life is worth and who will take care of your family, if youdon’t wear something in case of a fall.

VIPER XLS CLIMBING TREESTAND

One the things I wish I had this year because of the pressure on the deer was aclimbing stand. The Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show is where you willsee every stand on the market and get to talk to the people that make them, that also hunt. For me on my wish list before the fall gets here is the ViperXLS Climbing Treestand by Summit.

To me this is the ultimate climbing stand, with a cable system that requires NOfumbling with pins, knobs, nuts or bolts. Just simple to use, and a platformthat gives you lots of room and only weighing in at 20lbs won’t break your backgetting to that honey hole.

With the cushioned bar which give you a place to set your gun or bow and ableto adjust the seat height for gun and bowhunting, makes it the all aroundclimbing stand.

PAK-MULE

Also another product at the Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show thatstruck my interest is the is the PAK-MULE from Summit. The heavy tires and thefact that it folds up out of your way when you don’t need it and make itpossible to have a shorter trailer when hauling from home to the woods.

When room is an issue, Summit Treestands make more than just treestands. Checkit this trailer out, one of the neatest trailers for ATV’s I have seen.

TRU-GLO 360 QUIVER

TRU-GLO 360 QUIVER

One the things I bought last year was the Tru-Glo 360 Quiver for my bow. Tru- Glo also attended the Archery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show. For many ofyou that think is just a quiver, don’t be fooled. But forever, I have alwayswanted a quiver that would keep the arrows from being lost in a thicket or inthe dark. Also taking up less area but with more arrows was an added benefit.

Also one of the things I always hated was the fact that I had to take my quiveroff to put it in my bow case. Well it just so happen with the Tru-Glo 360 andthe type of bow case I have, which is no longer an issue. Which means I havefewer things to get together as I get out of the truck on an early morning hunt.

For me this is one of the things I put on my bow, I wish I would have had yearsbefore. I know for sure I will put this on my sons new bow.

After watching the Outdoor Channel last year and a short segment on Limb Saversfrom SIMS Vibration Laboratory, I was able to visit with them at Archery TradeAssociation 2003 Trade Show. Some times the small things make all thedifference. That is what I believe the Limb Saver can do for your bow and nowfor you gun.

It is very interesting to see how one little minor addition of a Limb Saver toyour bow can make things so much quieter. Like they say at SIMS VibrationLaboratory, they don’t make arrows they just make them quieter.

GENESIS BOW

IN ALL YOUR FAVORITE COLORS

One greatest things that has turned the Archery Industry to the future atArchery Trade Association 2003 Trade Show. Is the Genesis Bow, which is thefirst compound bow that automatically covers all standard draw lengths [15” to31”]. This means the bow will fit virtually anyone.

What this will mean, younger bow hunters will enter the great world of archery. The Genesis Bow is easy to shoot. It has an adjustable draw weight from 10 to20 lbs., but it shoots like a bow with higher poundage. Plus kids can’t outgrow it.

Bow is very affordable and comes in six colors. Blue raspberry, key lime, lemonyellow, red cherry, wild berry and camouflage.

This bow will ensure the future of archery for years to come, by making it afamily event. At least it will for my 8-year-old son, as Santa Claus deliveredone for Christmas. Of course camouflage was the pick of color.

So for you thinking about getting into archery or for you mother and fathersintroducing your kids into archery. Be sure and check this bow out.
