27th ANNUAL NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION CONVENTION
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - 2003
“FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING”
By Allen “horntagger” Morris

WHAT IS IT?

As you walked into the main exhibit hall of the National Wild Turkey Convention your ears are filled with the sounds of spring. Your mind and soul are remindedthat the another great turkey season and adventure of this upcoming spring is about on us again.

With hundreds of different wild turkey custom call companies and manufactures or on hand to explain the ways of the wild turkey, a passion for most and obsession for the rest of us. It is THE place to find the prefect sound you have always wanted!

It is also a place to take in great seminars from championship callers and hunters, along with wildlife biologist and game enforcement officers. Just for example Ron Schara, Preston Pittman, Mark Drury, Ray Eye, Steve Stoltz, Walter Parrott, Chris Parrish, Harold Knight, David Hale, Babe Winkleman, Eddie Salter, Alex Rutledge, Matt Morrett, Jim Pollard, Ricky Joe Bishop, Brenda Valentine, Ray Eye, Eddie Salter, David Blanton, and Michael Waddell It is THEplace you can ask the question you have always wanted to ask!

Also the best of the best from every age group and every little corner of the world arrive to compete for the grand prize of the best caller, owl hooter, call maker, youth art contest and taxidermist for this 4-day event. It is THEplace to find out just how good you are, and how you rank with the best of the best!

Some will come away with the satisfaction that they competed for the very sought after title. Which is an honor in itself as they compete alone on a stage with the best in the world. With 2000 on lookers on hand for the calling championship and every little yelp and cluck judge by their peers. Others will come away with bragging rights for a year and a trophy and money to take back with them. Almost like hunting the wild turkey but with a lot more pressure!!!!!!

You don’t have to be a turkey hunter to enjoy the exhibit hall. You could be adeer hunting and see Bass Pro Shop's "KING OF BUCKS" display that was on hand at the National Wild Turkey Convention. Featuring more than 150 monstrous whitetail mounts in a first ever-public showing!

So what is the National Wild Turkey Convention? Even if snow or ice is in the forecast it is without a doubt the first signs of SPRING.

WHY GO?

This was the first time I had attended and I was overwhelmed and mildly prepared by the number of different activities to participate in or just site back and watch.

I attended the 27th Annual National Wild Turkey Federation Convention for 3 days, February 14th – 16th, 2003 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and ConventionCenter – Nashville, Tennessee. Which again was easy to find all you had to do was follow the river camouflage hats and dress shirts along the sidewalk and into the Convention Center.

Even if you have been before nothing you can imagine can prepare you for a show like this. Without stopping and talking very long and walking at a steady paceit takes over hours just to see everything at a glimpse. With hundreds manufactures and suppliers on hand, answering question, showing you new products, selling new products. It is a one-stop shop for any turkey hunter.

FAMILY REUNION

Also at this event you can meet members of the National Wild Turkey Federation from every single state, along with a few from different countries. During invitational breakfast and the dinners you get to meat some members and chapters from different part of your state. Getting to see what other states and chapters do to help the heritage of hunting and the conservation of the wild turkey.

Well I am not going to list every manufacturer, supplier or outdoor personalities at the show, but I will list a several so you get an idea. Bill Jordan’s Realtree, Hunter’s Specialties, Primos Hunting Calls, Drury Outdoors, Knight & Hale Game Calls, Light N Sights, Little Big Horn Products, Wood Wise Products, Haller Caller Wildlife Call and Hunting Assesories, BASF, Bass Pro Shops, Crosman, Federal, International Paper, Marlin/H & R, Mossberg Firearms, Mossy Oak Brand Camo, Remington, U.S.Sportsmen’s Alliance, Wild Turkey Bourbon, Winchester/Olin for the manufacturers and suppliers.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD SLAM OF TURKEY CALLERS & HUNTERS

The top turkey callers and hunters in the world did not miss the chance to attend the National Wild Turkey Federation Convention exhibit hall along with a few special guest. Rob Keck – Chief Executive Office of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Carl Brown - Chief Operating Officer of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Alex Rutledge - Pro Staffer for Hunter Specialties, Ray Eye -Pro Staffer for Hunter Specialties, Eddie Salter - Pro Staffer for Hunter Specialties, Matt Morrett – Pro Staffer for Hunter Specialties, Duke Turnage - Pro Staffer for Primos Hunting Calls, Chris Ashley – Producer for Primos HuntingCalls, Chris Parrish – Pro Staffer for Knight & Hale Game Calls, Walter Parrott - TV Host of Knight & Hale Game Calls, Chuck Jones - TV/Video Producer of Knight & Hale Game Calls, David Hale - CoFounder of Knight & Hale Game Calls, Harold Knight – Co Founder of Knight & Hale Game Calls, Mark Drury - Host of Drury Outdoors, Terry Drury - Host of Drury Outdoors – Steve Stotlz – Pro Staffer for Outland Sports, Robert Couch –Pro Staffer for Wood Wise Products, Manuel Enriquez - EL HALCON Mexico's Premier Hunting Outfitter, Joe Hall - President of Hally Caller, Brenda Valentine - Co Host of Bass Pro's Outdoor World, Jerry Martin – Co Host of Bass Pro’s Outdoor World, Ralph Duren - The World's Best Natural Caller, Michael Waddell - Host of the Team Realtree's NEW - ROAD TRIP, David Blanton - Vice President/Television & Video Production for Team Realtree and Aaron Tippin Country Music Star.

You can honestly say the pro-staff for every company was on hand to answer questions. It’s like a family reunion and that the way they make you feel when they talk with you, just one of the family.

GET UP FOR BREAKFAST

For me the invitational Breakfast was by far the most interesting part. With individual members, chapter and sponsors of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Law Enforcement, Biologist and Communicators from around the nation getting awards for unbelievable volunteer efforts and accomplishments.

Also with speeches from Rob Keck Chief Executive Officer of the National Wild Turkey Federation on how the National Wild Turkey Federation is doing. Jerry Martin Co-Host of Bass Pro's Outdoor World TV Show on hand at Friday's Invitational Breakfast announcing the Bass Pro Shop's "KING OF BUCKS" display on hand at the Convention. Featuring more than 150 monstrous whitetail mounts in a first ever public showing!

Dr. Sam Billison, President Navajo Code Talkers Association was the Guest Speaker for Saturday's Invitational Breakfast. What a great story and true American and Soldier.

INSPIRATIONAL DINNERS

There is much reason to be a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Just to support the heritage of hunting and the conservation of the wild turkey, is reason enough alone.

There is much reason to increase your level of involvement or to increase your membership to a different level within the National Wild Turkey Federation.

If you just attended one the dinners during the 3 day that they where held, you would have found out why you would want to increase your membership to a different level within the National Wild Turkey Federation.

With speeches from Rob Keck – Chief Executive Officer of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Lt. General Emil R. Bedard bringing a message from President George W. Bush and a historic speech from Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas would be reason alone.

The great auction for items you could not find anywhere else but at the National Wild Turkey Federation Convention would again be reason alone. Along with awards giving to the best members, sponsors of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

In a matter of three days the Porter Wagoner, Oak Ridge Boys and comedian T. Bubba Bechtol and Country Music Artist Jeff Carson, Grammy recording artist Alison Krauss and Union Station featuring Jerry Douglas, entertained wild turkey enthusiasts from across the country. That alone would be one more reason to attend the National Wild Turkey Convention.

IF YOU ARE A DEALER OR INDIVIDUAL

With over 150 pictures taken and long article does not serve the National Wild Turkey Federation Convention justice, only your attendance at this event can bring it to life.

With events like this, I will say that the heritage of hunting and the conservation of the wild turkey along with many other animals will have a strong future. Because it is strong in tradition among so many people and companies trying to keep it alive!

Just in case you want to get a head start for next year. For the 2003 National Wild Turkey Federation Convention – I hope to show you some different companies you need to take a look at this year. These are just some of the products at the show that struck my interest and might benefit you the hunter in the next season. You will have to decide for your self if these products are what you are missing.

Keep checking back as I go through my list of around  different and new products, some of the pictures are already posted. Allen “horntagger” Morris

Epeards - Lounge Turkey Vest

After seeing Little Big Horn Products for the first time at the Buckmaster Expoin 2002 and buying the Deer-Hunters Bandoleer which after a few minormodification is now my all time favorite bowhunting vest. But at the ArcherTrade Association 2003 Trade Show and now at the National Wild Turkey Convention. I was able to see some more products fromthe Little Big Horn. The one that really impressed me was the Epeards-Lounge –The last turkey vest you’ll ever need. Also which impresses me even more is thefact that with more and more kids hitting the woods, but nothing fits. Well newthis Jake-Lounge, which is a turkey vest, lounge chair combination for thesmaller hunter.

I will have to get one for my boy before the youth turkey season starts. And oncehe grows a little a Deer-Hunters Bandoleer for bow season.

Spring turkey season may be over and you might have missed this year but check out Light’n Sights BeardBuster Combo with RingOFire rear sight, that might just do the trick for you before fall gets here or before the next spring season. This has to be great for target eye acquisition. For you guys that are getting ready to take kids out hunting or already have you might want to look at this. It is bound to be great for teaching kids or anyone for that matter on how to shoot using sights, and might even be better to teach or use than a scope so you don’t have to worry about eye relief.

SPORTSMEN - NEXT TIME YOU VOTE
By: Allen “horntagger” Morris

I have always said “VOTE FOR THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB” either republican or
democrat does not matter – just vote for the best person.

Believe it or not while attending the 27th Annual Wild Turkey Federation Convention in Nashville, TN., the most inspirational speech on why HONOR,HERITAGE, HARVEST and HOPE are the life force of sportsmen and conservationist across this great nation, came from a politician.

During the speech I had no clue whether this person was a republican ordemocrat and it did not matter. What mattered, is he told the truth about what hunting is all about. I believe as a sportsmen and conservationist I have the obligation not to let one of the most HISTORICAL speeches on the conservation of our wildlife and the heritage of hunting pass in the night.

The following is from a man, a sportsman, a conservationist, and a politician Ihad never met before the speech and you should not meet until the very end of his speech.

READ CAREFULLY and with the future of hunting in mind. Ask yourself ONEquestion next time you vote.

Does your Governor, Representative, Congressman, etc. ever stood up for thesportsmen, or wildlife like this man does?

SPEECH AT THE NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION CONVENTION
Saturday, February 15th, 2003

(OPENING COMMENTS …)

Though it’s the love of turkey hunting that brings us here to Nashville … ifyou’re a hunter, it really doesn’t matter what your “game of choice” is.

Regardless of whether the hairs on the back of your neck respond to the snortof a whitetail buck … the chatter of a dozen green-heads coming in to light … or the cackle of an early morning Gobbler shaking off the morning chill … hunters tend to share some pretty important ideals about family, our heritage, our country, and our freedom that builds a powerful bond between us.

You can talk to a die-hard, third-generation Muley hunter in northern Coloradoor a bundled-up, blue-nosed city slicker freezing his keaster off in a duck blind in South Arkansas … and I think you’ll find a lot in common.

In my mind, the Hunter’s America has a lot in common with the America ourforefathers envisioned for us.

To me, the Hunter’s America is the America that I call home. To me, theHunter’s America is one of HONOR, HERITAGE, HARVEST and HOPE.

HONOR:

We hear a lot about honor … We see it revered in a documentary about a fallenwar hero who gave his life to protect a comrade. We talk about honor as a virtue of the heroic and something that gains acclaim and commendation. And we’re right to glorify those who make such conspicuous sacrifices in the name of honor.

But there’s also another kind of honor. It’s one that’s no less important -but which usually goes unnoticed by most. It’s the honor that we live with in our daily lives – the honor we try to build into our children’s fiber not just to be triggered in times of drama or crisis, but as something they live with as part of their character. We want them to be honorable not just when the world is looking, but just as importantly, when there’s no one looking.

And the life of a hunter is one marked by honor. The very act of going intothe great outdoors to play by the rules of Mother Nature honors the Creator in a very real and interactive way.

Who among us hasn’t had a moment in the outdoors when we were alone amidst thewonder of creation and felt compelled to thank God for giving us that day – that hour – that special moment?

You may not have said it out loud, and you don’t have to be an “every-Sunday-church-goer” to feel it, but in the life of every hunter, there comes a moment (hopefully many) when you truly understand the “JOY” of life and you honor your creator by honoring His creation.

And hunting teaches sportsmanship. It teaches our children to play by therules - the rules of man and the rules of nature. It teaches that life is something given by God and is to be respected, in all its forms. We understand that God put man in a very special role of stewardship over this creation of His … a role that requires us to study his creation and play an active role in maintaining it. We don’t simply kill game to practice the art of killing – for there’s no honor in that. We harvest game to feed our families and to preserve and protect a species.

We teach our children to respect the firearm as a tool of freedom, not as animplement of careless destruction.

A child who learns the doctrines of marksmanship and safe gun-handling from aparent or another caring adult will rarely ever misuse or abuse a firearm to hurt another human being.

To the hunter, the firearm is a means of providing for his family andprotecting his way of life.

And in this day and age where that freedom is increasingly being threatened,it’s simply not enough to teach our children to respect firearms - we must actively defend their right to own them when they come of age.

Let us not forget that the 2nd Amendment is the one that makes all other rightspossible … and let us teach our children that being active in democracy is the surest and the only way to preserve it.

HERITAGE:

Hunting is also about heritage.

How many of you had the great joy of being taught to hunt by a parent? – Iwould guess the majority of us learned from a close relative.

The heritage of hunting is one of the most enduring and unchanging traditionsof the American way of life.

Though our guns may shoot a little straighter today … and we may wear moreexpensive clothing with better camouflage and use a GPS to keep from gettinglost in the woods … theway we hunt is really not that different from the way Dad taught us. It’sreally not that different from the way his Dad taught him.

How many of you own a favorite shotgun or rifle that your Dad passed down toyou?

It may not be the best gun in the world … it may not be in the best shape … itmay have a split in the stock or some rust spots from too many long wet days inthe winter weather … it may need more TLC than any other gun you own and youmay not ever even really get to shoot it much. But my guess is – that’s thelast gun on Earth you’d ever part with. Why? Because that gun is part of yourfamily’s heritage. It connects you to your Dad or your Grandpa or your Unclebecause you know that just as you hold that gun in your hands, they held it intheirs in some far-off field, taking quail on the wing or trudging through knee-deep snow tracking a 10-point buck. That well-worn piece of walnut and steelis a tangible connection to who you are and where you come from.

Can you imagine a Dad passing down as a family heirloom a favorite video game?I can’t. Our heritage is truly precious and I hope we all treat it as such inour own individual ways.

Heritage is about family traditions and a way of life that makes a child feelconnected to something larger than himself. And for those of us in this room,Hunting is our heritage.

HARVEST:

Hunting is also about the Harvest … the satisfaction of planning for something, working hard and ultimately acquiring it. It’s about a work ethic upon whichsuccess is predicated.

When the National Turkey Federation was founded in 1973, there were anestimated 1.3 million turkeys inhabiting America’s woodlands. Thanks to thecombined work of government wildlife agencies and the Turkey Federation’s manyvolunteers and partners, that number has grown to an estimated 5.6 million.

And the number of turkey hunters has doubled to nearly 3 million.

In my home state of Arkansas, our turkey numbers are at an all-time high –surpassing 155,000 birds. Our 74 Federation chapters have spent more than $1million to enhance habitat, purchase equipment, acquire land and educate thepublic about conservation.

You see, a true hunter knows it’s not just about the taking of game – it’s alsoabout providing for game the next season. In almost every species of huntedanimal in the United States, it’s the hunters, hunting associations andwildlife agencies that protect and grow the population. The environmentalistsand tree-huggers may talk a good game, but it’s the hunting men and women ofthis country that truly protect the wildlife they hunt. That’s a concept thatmany refuse to understand, but one that bears repeating … Conservation isdeeply embedded in the heart of the hunter. Planning and working for theharvest are essential to who we are.

HOPE:

And lastly, but maybe most importantly, hunting is about HOPE.

Hope is what guides us through life and what guides us through the woods on anearly Spring morning. Hope is what we thrive on as human beings and withoutit, we simply perish.

A hunter never walked into the woods that didn’t hope TODAY was the day thatthe big one – a gobbler he could tell his grandkids about - was going to comeclucking around that old walnut stump by the thicket.

I’ve never cast a spinner bait into the Arkansas River that I didn’t think hadat least a chance of pulling out a largemouth. HOPE is the central element ofthe hunt … without it, we would just stay at home in a warm bed.

But the hope we imbue in our children through hunting is so much moremeaningful in terms of their lives. Kids who grow up with HOPE become theentrepreneurs of tomorrow – the visionaries who understand that good thingsrarely ever come just out of sheer luck – they almost always require patience, preparation and determination. And these are the very qualities we teach themwhen we take them afield with us.

I believe God has a special place in his heart for the hunters and thefisherman of this world - for no one appreciates His creation more.

God watches these ever hopeful souls rise morning after morning in search of adream that is as much about His wonder and greatness as it is about mounting abig rack on the wall or making a fan from turkey feathers.

We have HOPE when we’re hunting because we know that God has provided abountiful world for us. We know that in pursuing its rewards, we’re fulfillinghis charge to us to be good stewards and make the most out of the world He’screated.

We HUNT and, in turn, we HOPE because He gives us reason to HOPE. And in ourmany years spent afield, we do an awful lot of living along the way.

CONCLUSION FROM WRITER

If you answered yes to the question, the heritage of hunting and thepreservation and conservation of our wildlife and it’s habitat, will bereflected in your kid’s eyes some day.

If you answered no to the question, you are left with two choices. You can thenext time you vote find out who OPENLY supports the heritage of hunting, andthe preservation and conservation of our wildlife and it’s habitat, and make achange, only you have that power. If you fall short of that goal you can just turn to you child andeventually your child’s child and tell them SORRY.

ONLY YOU HAVE THAT POWER.

Hope to see you in the woods or on the waters. Horntagger
